Eli Roth Talks 'Hostel II' Box-Office, Blames Rampant Piracy, Says 'Cell' Is Now On Hold
Filed under: Horror, New Releases, Lionsgate Films, Celebrities and Controversy, Box Office
Director Eli Roth is speaking out about the lackluster box-office for his latest film, Hostel: Part II, and he's blaming everyone but himself. Roth puts piracy front and center as the reason for the film's performance. "Piracy has become worse than ever now, and a stolen workprint (with unfinished music, no sound effects, and no VFX) leaked out on online before the release, and is really hurting us, especially internationally," he says, before going on to specifically tear into critics who reviewed a leaked copy of the film. "Critics have actually been reviewing the film based off the pirated copy, which is inexcusable," he says. "Some of these critics I have actually known for a few years, and while I wouldn't dignify them by mentioning them by name, I know who they are, as do the studios, and other filmmakers, and they will no longer have any access to any of my films." Roth also advises fans of his that haven't seen Hostel: Part II to "go now, because after next weekend the film will be gone from theaters."
As for the future, Roth says "I am not directing Cell any time soon, and I most likely will take the rest of the year to write my other projects. Which means I wouldn't shoot until the spring and you wouldn't see a film directed by me in the cinemas until at least next fall." He goes on to say that in Hollywood, "the R-rated horror film is in serious jeopardy. Studios feel the public doesn't want them anymore, and so they are only putting PG-13 films into production. The only way to counter this perception is to get out there and support R-rated horror."

Looks like Mr. Roth needs a nice slice of shattered dream pie (or maybe, just maybe, the ambition to make a better movie).

After Hostel I really expected the ante to be upped in this sequel but none of the gore was as shocking and letting us see Weiner Girls naked upside down boobies was not enough to carrie a pretty boring film.

Piracy did hurt Hostel 2 a lot and im ashamed of it im guilty as hell i dled this 2 weeks before this was even in theater if i didnt and couldent of downloaded it i would have been in the theater i was even planning to try and see if there was a midnight screening i know i still could have done it but if im broke and i already watched it why would i want to see it again in the theater. i just hope that they dont drop r rated horror movies and go strictly to crap like scream and i know what you did last summer i know they are classics but they were basically child movies.

This is not a perception Eli, people finally understand that the studios have been milking your kind of movies for too long. It's crap. Come up with a story, stop using shock and awe.

This is the perfect example of why 'Hollywood' is against piracy. They make crap movies, they perform crap and they blame the piraters. There is no way piracy explains the extremely low box office pull of Hostel II. He'd be better off blaming the big studios for making better, more attractive movies.

The only good movie Eli has directed is Cabin Fever and even then that's only because its a bit of a campy flick.
I really hope he -doesn't- direct Cell and passes it on to someone else, because I loved that book and I don't want the film to be along the same crap vein as the Hostel movies. Seriously, Hostel is the only horror movie I have ever contemplated walking out of for no other reason than sheer boredom. No way am I paying good money to see Hostel 2.

It's funny watching the implosion of torture porn king wanabee Roth and listening to him whine about how his foul movie was undone by the release of a unfinished cut of the movie. Let's see, piracy as the excuse. A quick look at the movies you can get online right this minute now includes - all of them. Humm, but a copy of this movie killed just his box office. Curious. It couldn't possibly be that he made a crap torture porn movie and that now people know what the difference between a horror movie and a torture porn movie is and know which one to avoid? Naw, that couldn't be it at all. I take it back, it's not funny watching Roth implode. It's like karma, like watching karma in action.

Eli - maybe people are becoming bored with this trash? It's fecal matter cinema - good riddance to it.
I'm so sick of the "blame it on Piracy crap" - the vast majority are too uninformed or lazy to do this.
Of all the people I know with DVD burners - only three have EVER copied a DVD. I asked about 20 people. Most people just don't care.

Is this a director's "My Dog Ate It" excuse these days? Seems that I've heard the "rampant piracy" complaint more than once when a film didn't do as expected (hoped?) at the box office. Maybe people are just getting tired of this genre. (reading the comments above; agreed with #14 (jeffNLA) on everything he's saying)

The real horror here is how much Roth is full of himself. He's the Mark McGrath of directors. I mean, he's like some shlock reality show guy who won a contest to make films.
I remember reading about "Cabin Fever" and buying into the hype about how great it was. What a piece of shite that was. What is this? Horror exclusively for the dumbed down MTV, spring break, crowd? Too bad because I was really looking for a scare.
Wanna see a good horror flick that really scares and doesn't have to resort to the "horror porn" schtick?
Neil Marshall's The Descent, UK version (2005)
How 'bout a horror flick about a 3-headed monster that terrorizes moviegoers across the country who are trying to see good films. The heads of the monster are Eli Roth, Brett Ratner, and Kevin Smith. The monster is called "THE WAY THE FUCK OVERRATED MONSTER."
I'd pay a dollar to see that.

Dear Eli,
The movie was unscary, gory misogynistic dogshit. I've watched TV commercials that have done more to expand the artistic integrity of the American cinema experience that your fucking worthless sequel to a movie that never should have been green-lighted to begin with. I can't fathom what you masturbate to, but I'm sure its resemblance to this film is remarkable.
Kindly get the fuck over yourself.

I think the reason no-one wants to watch his drivel is because their is no story, just buckets and buckets of blood. Bring back psychological thrillers, American movies goers aren't as dumb as people like Roth think they are. We want movies that intrigue, make us think. not snuff films. His movies suck, and the piracy card is as overplayed as it gets.

Aww....did poor Eli get his ego hurt? Maybe receiving consumer backlash for releasing an extremely inferior product (something that, surprisingly, makes Alone in the Dark tolerable to watch) is too much for this idget to handle; consumers generally don't like to watch something as foul (or boring) as the excrement leaving their anuses, so I personally don't see why lil' Eli can't comprehend why anything not a fly wasn't attracted to his movie. As for "blame the pirates"...obviously he doesn't know much about piracy; if he did, he'd realize that the handful of people that did download his film would probably be more than happy to pay top dollar to get Shitsicle...I mean, Hostel II off of their hard drives.

I'm always very happy to support good R-rated horror in the theatres. Unfortunately, those movies are few and far between. I'd like to see more movies like The Descent, where the director didn't have to keep reminding us how "intelligent" his movie is because we see the proof on screen.
I actually enjoyed the goofiness of Cabin Fever. I think Roth took a wrong turn with Hostel, which just takes itself way too seriously.
